A Little History
The building once formed part of the Château de Graveson and was spared at the revolution thanks to its agricultural activities.
At the time it was known as the “Mas du Ferrage” and was occupied by the lord of the manor’s blacksmith.
Confiscated at the revolution, then sold, the traditional Provençal “mas” was converted towards the middle of the 19th century into a coaching inn for the stagecoaches and other horse-drawn vehicles on the Avignon-Arles and Tarascon-Châteaurenard routes. Since timetables had to be adhered to, a sundial was set into the front of the building in 1846.
The part reserved for the inn proper, providing bed and board, was named the “Cabaret Neuf”, a name later given to the street.
At the end of the horse-drawn era, the inn was closed, although it kept its name.
The sundial on the front wall, together with the look-out post used to scour the horizon for approaching coaches, are vestiges of this past.
Towards 1880, it became the property of Mr. Vallon, the mayor of Graveson, who set up a silk factory within its walls, with the silkworm farm in the attic and the spinning workshop on the ground floor.
The 1909 earthquake brought down the church tower at Graveson, but the Cadran Solaire, although shaken about, stayed standing.
The paving stones in the central alleyway once paved the streets of Avignon and were salvaged from the Durance.
From family “pension” in the 1980’s to small hotel and finally “hôtel de charme” after 2000, over the years the Cadran Solaire has managed to adapt its attire to suit the times and thus satisfy the demands of a new type of traveller in the 21st century.
Relax in our luxuriant garden, listening to the centuries-old trees -plane, olive, laurel, persimmon, rose and wisteria- whispering a tale of Provence, lulled by the cicadas’ song.
At dusk, in the early-evening freshness, you will be able to sit and contemplate the star-filled sky of Provence while breathing in the summer’s fragrances, to the sound of the cicadas’ chorus.
The bustle of 19th century travellers has long disappeared and the charming hotel Cadran Solaire is now an oasis of peace for guests seeking relaxation and a change of scenery.
